On April 13 we will gather in Saint John to prepare for our future, as a party and as a province.

Since we last met as a party we have gone through many changes. More than ever, the people of New Brunswick are looking to the New Democrats to provide a new way forward. In Saint John we will define that plan.

I want you to be there. The New Democrats need your energy and your ideas to help build our party for the future.

Join me and hundreds of New Democrats from across the province at SJ2012! It will be fun, it will be challenging, and we'll leave Convention ready with a message of hope for our province.

When and Where

Wonderful uptown Saint John will host SJ2012 at the Delta Brunswick (39 King St.) from Friday, April 13, to Sunday, April 15. The convention will begin at 5pm on the Friday and end at 1pm on the Sunday.

Don't Miss Out on These Companion Events During SJ2012 Weekend!

Leader's Levee Dinner at the Saint John Alehouse, just steps away from the Delta Brunswick (1 Market Square), on Saturday, April 14, at 7pm. Enjoy a fantastic four-course meal from Chef Jesse Vergen in an intimate setting with New Democrat Leader Dominic Cardy and special guest speakers. (You do not have to be a convention delegate to attend the Leader's Levee).

Party with the Party with live music and a cash bar on Friday, April 13, at 8pm at the Delta Brunswick. Tickets will be available at the door for only $10. You do not have to be a convention delegate to attend.

Accommodation

A limited number of rooms at a discounted rate of $99.00 per night are available from the Delta Brunswick to convention delegates once they have paid their registration fees to the party. 

Other affordable hotels are also available throughout the Greater Saint John area.

The New Democrat provincial office is organizing billeting for out of town delegates with local New Democrats in Saint John. Delegates interested in billeting are invited to call provincial office at 1-888-740-3032 (458-5828 in Fredericton) to ask to be put on the billeting list. Every effort will be made to provide a billet to everyone who requests one, but whether everyone can be accommodated will ultimately depend on the number of billets available. 

How to become a delegate

To be delegate to SJ2012, you must to be a member in good standing of New Brunswick's New Democrats thirty days before the convention (March 14) and receive a "delegate credential".

Under the New Brunswick New Democrat constitution, each constituency association in good standing gets one delegate credential for every five party members in good standing in the constituency. 

In ridings with an active New Democrat constituency association, delegates are elected at a pre-convention meeting that takes places between thirty and sixty days before the convention. If you are a party member and your local New Democrat constituency association holds a pre-convention meeting, you will receive notice of the meeting from your local association.

If you live in an area that does not have an active New Democrat constituency association, or if you joined the New Democrats after your local pre-convention meeting had already taken place, register now to be added to the stand-by list for unused delegate credentials. Register as soon as possible to avoid missing out!

These fees count as political contributions, so the true cost can be as little as $25 after the political contribution tax credit.

Under the New Brunswick New Democrat constitution, members of the party's Provincial Council (which is like a Board of Directors) automatically get delegate credentials to conventions but must still pay the delegate fee like everyone else.

Registration Deadline

If there is a waiting list for unused delegate credentials, and there are people with delegate credentials who have not registered for SJ2012 by March 28, these credentials will be transferred to people on the waiting list on March 29. Therefore, it is important for Provincial Council members and people who get delegate credentials from local association meetings to register and pay their fees by March 28 to be assured of keeping their place.

Financial assistance for delegates

The party has created a Fund to pay for waiving or discounting the delegate fees for people experiencing financial hardship, such as unwaged people. 

If you would like to donate to this Fund to help a lower-income New Democrat attend the convention, please call Provincial Office at 1-888-740-3022 (458-5828 in Fredericton) and ask to donate to the Sponsor a Delegate Fund. Your donation makes a huge difference: with your generous support, the Fund will be able to provide bigger discounts to more people!

Karlie will be keeping a confidential list of all requests; your name and personal information will not be shared or published.
